Rudy & Sasha

We received a call about Rudy, who was diagnosed with Listeriosis, a bacterium that can be fatal once it enters the brain. Rudy had started treatment but required follow-up medication for seven days. His owner, dealing with her own loss, struggled to administer Rudy's injections properly. Consequently, the disease persisted, and was progressing causing blindness, imbalance, and a loss of appetite. It was critical to get him to us quickly to save him. We also discovered he had a sister named Sasha, who was to be rehomed separately. The thought of separating them after six years together was inconceivable to us, particularly given Rudy's delicate condition. We could not allow this boy to get stressed. Despite Rudy's severe illness and the upheaval from his familiar surroundings, we brought both of them here. Rudy's recovery was arduous. The first challenge was sourcing Penicillin, as it was unavailable everywhere, even from veterinarians. It's one of the only drugs that can penetrate the brain's blood barrier to eliminate the bacteria.

Ultimately, we located the needed supplies in Georgia. Greg undertook a two-hour drive each way to obtain the bottles required for Rudy's treatment.
Rudy underwent two weeks of Pen G injections, B Complex supplements, hand-feeding due to his frail condition, and assistance with standing. The turning point was the return of his eyesight. Having his sister by his side meant he didn't face recovery alone.
Rudy has now fully recovered and lives with his sister in the large goat barn. He is the gentlest, sweetest old soul. Indeed, miracles do happen here.
