We received a report concerning a young goat suffering from severe eye damage. It appears that the owner applied a caustic dis-budding cream, intended for dehorning, to a 3-day-old goat kid, resulting in the exposure of the entire eyeball.
**Dehorning paste, which typically contains calcium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide, chemically burns the horn bud to prevent horn growth by destroying the cells responsible for it. Only a small amount, roughly the size of a nickel, is necessary for this process. This procedure is known to cause pain.
The unfortunate outcome for this goat was a misshapen eye that might have required surgical removal and scorched ears.
By the time the baby came into our care, he was already 3 months old, indicating that he had been suffering without any medical intervention for three months.
His right eye is distended, but surgery is not yet deemed necessary. The left eye's eyelid, however, has been pulled upwards due to the healing of the skin, leaving the tissue underneath exposed in a horrific way. He underwent reconstructive eye surgery to extend the skin, which could not stretch enough to completely cover the damage, so a skin graft was performed at the time of surgery. Thankfully, this little one is no longer in pain, and he was able to keep his eye.
