Tack's Story
Tack, a "commercial meat" turkey, was rescued after suffering neurological damage due to severe bullying by other turkeys and being left out in the cold. She faced mobility and balance issues, which were improving until she regressed and required oral anti-inflammatory and pain medication. During Covid, with many northern sanctuaries short-staffed or closed, her caretaker reached out to us.
Driven by love and dedication, Tack's human companion traveled with her for two days from Massachusetts to North Carolina to bring her to our sanctuary.
The bullying had led to a bacterial infection in Tack, which progressed to a respiratory infection and caused a tear in her air sac. As poultry have air sacs throughout their bodies, the infection spread to her leg, impairing her walking ability. The damage is irreparable, but we've provided a wheelchair for mobility, and she began taking unassisted steps, and is now mobile unassisted.
Tack is fortunate; her breed is usually raised for rapid growth and early slaughter in the commercial industry. Slaughtered at just 14-16 weeks of age.
